Mariel Kozberg, MD, PhD

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF NEUROLOGY

Mariel is a vascular neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. She received her BS in Chemical-Biological Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completed her MD and PhD degrees at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. For her PhD thesis, she worked with Dr. Elizabeth Hillman studying the postnatal development of neurovascular coupling, the relationship between neural activity and blood flow in the brain. Remaining focused on the brain’s vasculature, Mariel completed a Neurology Residency and Vascular Neurology Fellowship at Mass General Brigham. For her post-doctoral research, mentored by Dr. Susanne van Veluw and Dr. Steven Greenberg at Mass General, she studied blood vessel dysfunction in the disease cerebral amyloid angiopathy, a leading cause of hemorrhagic stroke.

Mariel is a recipient of a K08 award (NINDS) and an AHA Second Century Early Faculty Independence Award. Her research continues to focus on cerebral amyloid angiopathy, with an emphasis on understanding the mechanisms underlying the rupture of blood vessels in this disease. Clinically, Mariel attends on the inpatient stroke and acute stroke services. Her outpatient practice is centered on providing care to patients at risk for hemorrhagic stroke, including hemorrhagic stroke survivors.

Outside of work, Mariel likes to ski, hike, and spend time with her dog Astro (short for Astrocyte).
